Operating System Monitoring with PRTG

  • PRTG supports Windows OS monitoring.
  • PRTG supports Linux and macOS monitoring.
  • PRTG uses SNMP, performance counters, and WMI.
  • PRTG is agentless monitoring.
  • PRTG comes with an alarm system.

Reference point: several different operating systems

Many administrators work with a variety of network operating systems. Computers, servers, firewalls – the range of operating systems is extensive.

PRTG stands out from the crowd because it is not only customizable, but also compatible with the products of all major operating system manufacturers.

MONITORING WINDOWS WITH PRTG
PRTG monitors the following components of servers and computers running Windows: CPU, traffic, memory, hard drives, and more. To do this, the application uses Technology (WMI), performance counters, and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). PrTG is even capable of analyzing applications such as Windows SharePoint and Microsoft SQL, Windows Event Log files, and Security Center. Learn more about Windows Monitoring.

MONITORING LINUX WITH PRTG
PRTG monitors Linux operating systems, which makes it possible to also monitor the operation of your servers. The program uses SNMP and SSH protocols for this. PRTG can be installed on popular distributions such as Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, RedHat and SUSE. In addition, it can read data from other Linux distributions. Learn more about Linux monitoring.

MONITOR MAC OS X WITH PRTG
PRTG also monitors macOS. Despite the fact that macOS is used only in very small networks, this OS is often installed on workstations, and sometimes even on servers. Here, PRTG also uses the SNMP protocol. Some macOS systems (such as Yosemite version 10.10) can also be monitored via SSH.

OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS
Many network devices contain their own operating systems. Examples include SonicWall firewalls, IBM servers, and VMware virtualization solutions. A big advantage of PRTG is that this application comes with sensors for products of certain manufacturers, as well as sensors that the user can configure.

Other sensors to help you get started

  • SNMP sensors. Discover the many SNMP sensors available in PRTG that are designed specifically for products from different manufacturers and operating systems.
  • WMI sensors/performance counters. Explore the full range of our standard Windows sensors, which are powered by Windows Management Instrumentation technology, and performance counters.
  • Common sensors. Our most widely used sensors include the ping sensor, the ports sensor, and the HTTP sensor.

Advantages of PRTG

FOR ALL POPULAR OPERATING SYSTEMS
The PRTG application is compatible with all the most popular operating systems. These include Windows as well as Linux with many distributions. If you are using multiple operating systems at the same time, PRTG can serve as a centralized monitoring tool.

FOR CUSTOMIZABLE MONITORING
Customizable PRTG sensors allow you to implement monitoring that will exactly match your network and use cases. PRTG adapts to your network and is used as a single monitoring tool.

QUICK INSTALLATION
PRTG’s Autodiscover feature searches for devices and configures initial monitoring during program installation. With automatic detection, ping queries and the corresponding ready-made device templates are used during installation to save your valuable time.

ALL INCLUSIVE
There are no hidden fees when using PRTG. PRTG is an all-inclusive software. This means you’ll get reporting features, a notification system, and technical support at no extra cost. Due to this, the calculation of costs becomes clear and simple.

Agent-based and agentless monitoring

AGENTLESS MONITORING: STANDARD FOR PRTG
When using PRTG, you do not need to install software on monitored devices. Our network monitoring tool works agentlessly. PRTG uses common protocols such as SNMP, WMI or performance counters and SSH that are available on the target devices. Due to this, the load on the system is minimized and you can quickly start monitoring.

MONITORING WITH AGENTS FOR DISTRIBUTED MONITORING AND LOAD BALANCING
Tracking the operation of multiple networks with a single monitoring solution is usually impossible or costly. PRTG works differently: thanks to the remote probes available in the program, even distributed networks can be monitored. Here’s how it works: A remote probe is created on a server on an external network, providing monitoring for all devices in that location. Because remote probes can be installed on any Windows system, PRTG can also be used as an agent-based monitoring tool, such as load balancing, even if it is not typically required.
